Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows
IMPORTANT FIRST STEP - UNINSTALL OLD ANTI-VIRUS APPLICATIONS
- Anti-Virus applications like Sophos should NOT be installed until all other anti-virus applications are uninstalled first
- We strongly suggest uninstalling any anti-virus package before installing Sophos
How do I uninstall my existing anti-virus software?
On Windows XP:
- Click START
- Click CONTROL PANEL, located on the right column
- Click ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS
- Search for your antivirus software (McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Grisoft, etc).
- Highlight the software and click REMOVE
On Windows Vista:
- Click START
- Click CONTROL PANEL
- Double click PROGRAMS AND FEATURES
- Search for your antivirus software (McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Grisoft, etc).
- Highlight the software and click on UNINSTALL/CHANGE

Sophos Antivirus for Windows
- This download requires a valid Nichols College username and password (Hint: Same username and password used for Nichols WebMail)
- Enter your username and password after you select the appropriate download, then select "OK"
- When prompted select "Save" as seen below
- Select a location to save the download, for example, your Desktop, Then click "Save"
- After the download has completed you should see an icon similar to the following on desktop
Install
- Once downloaded, run the Sophos installer by double clicking it

Sophos Anti-Virus is designed to install silently
- Therefore, after you click on the downloaded file, please do not double click or run the installation again
- If you do not currently have anti-virus protection or you followed the "Uninstall old Anti-Virus Applications" directions above, the installer should start within a couple of minutes
- If you did not follow the "Uninstall old Anti-Virus Applications" instructions or still have anti-virus software installed, the installation may take up to 20 – 25 minutes

- After the Sophos anti-virus installer starts, you should see the below black window indicating the installer is working.
- Within a minute or two, you should see the new Sophos Anti-Virus shield icon. See example below.
- When the shield is Grey and blinking Green it indicates that it is installing and updating
- You may receive the below message after installing Sophos; however Sophos should install and operate normally. This is a known software issue, but the application is protecting your computer.
- When the Sophos icon is solid blue nad is not blinking, the installer is done as seen below
- To ensure it is updated, hover and leave the mouse cursor over the Sophos icon and you should see text similar to "Protected by Sophos, Last checked for updates: " followed by a recent date and time similar to what is seen below
